2018 will see another Royal Wedding, as Prince Harry marries American actress Meghan Markle on May 19th. This whirlwind romance of Harry and Meghan has taken the world by storm, and the press, royal watchers and the general public have had their imagination caught by a couple who are clearly very much in love.
Harry first met Meghan in the spring of 2016, introduced by mutual friend Markus Anderson at a swanky Soho House reception. The dashing prince, who had always fancied Meghan when she played Rachel Zane in the TV show “Suits”, fell head over heels in love right there, and spent the next weeks pestering the actress with a barrage of text messages until she agreed to a date. Meghan was then famously photographed alongside Harry in the Royal Box at Wimbledon, before heading stateside after Harry treated her to a weekend at his friend’s house high in the Hollywood Hills.
The paparazzi loved it, of course, but the first hints that this could be the start of something serious came in October, when Meghan posted a pic on her Instagram account of her wearing a blue beaded bracelet, at the same time that Harry was pictured wearing the exact same bracelet on an official engagement in Africa.
Harry confirmed their relationship in November, and in an unprecedented move, appealed via Kensington Palace channels for the couple to be left in peace so that they could get to know each other better.
A mutual friend then confirmed to the press that the relationship had “moved very fast and they can’t bear to be apart”. Things took another dramatic turn on November 21st, when Antiguan PM Gaston Browne teased Harry on an official visit by announcing: “I believe we are expecting a new princess soon. I want know that you are very welcome to come on your honeymoon here… there will be nowhere in the world as special to spend your honeymoon, when that day arrives.”
After enjoying their first Christmas together, Harry swept Meghan off to Norway in January to see the Northern Lights, before introducing her to the Duchess of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte at Kensington Palace. Suggestions that the couple were soon to get hitched stepped up a gear when Meghan mothballed her lifestyle portal The Tig after three successful years, before the announcement of a spring 2018 wedding in November last year.
Harry and Meghan’s relationship shows just how much things have changed in terms of who a Royal may be allowed to marry. Not only is Meghan very much a commoner – and an American, to boot – but she is also a divorcee. When you consider the fuss that has been made about divorces connected with Royalty in the past few decades, this shows that the world’s most iconic family is finally joining the modern age.
